Slack messages by voice
Answer the channel or the thread by talking, and DanDin writes a tidy message in your mix of Arabic and English.
Yes, you can write Slack messages by voice, in its Mac and Windows apps or in the browser. Click in the message box in the channel or the thread, hold the start key and talk. DanDin writes a tidy message, and English words you say inside Arabic speech, like deploy and bug, stay in English letters, because Arabic + English is the default mode. It never presses Enter, so the message waits for you to check it.
How to voice type in Slack
On a Mac
- Open Slack and go to the channel or direct message.
- Click in the message box, or in the reply box inside the thread if you want to answer there.
- Hold Fn, talk, then let go.
- Check the message and press Enter. For a new line before sending, Shift + Enter works as usual.
On Windows
- Open Slack for Windows, or app.slack.com in a browser.
- Put the cursor in the message box.
- Hold Ctrl + Win, talk, then let go.
- A list you count out loud comes out as numbered lines, and stays in the box until you press Enter.
An example in Slack
An update in the team channel
You say
hey team small update the release moved to tomorrow morning because there is a bug on the checkout page Sara and I are on it and um if anyone has questions bring them to the standup at ten
DanDin types
Hey team, small update: the release moved to tomorrow morning because there is a bug on the checkout page. Sara and I are on it, and if anyone has questions, bring them to the standup at 10.
Good to know in Slack
- DanDin reads the window title (the channel or person) to spell names right, and on a Mac it also sees the last messages on screen. It never replies or sends for you.
- Add @mentions and emoji by hand after the paste.
- With no internet nothing is typed, but your recording is saved on your computer, and Retry sends it again once you are back online.
- If you want every word in Arabic letters, pick Arabic only, and deploy is written as it sounded, in Arabic letters.
- In a Slack huddle or call, it is the same microphone: mute yourself in the call before you dictate, or they will hear you.
Common questions
How do I voice type in Slack?
Click in the message box, hold the start key (Fn on a Mac, Ctrl + Win on Windows), talk, and let go. The message is typed, and you send it with Enter.
Does it keep English words in English letters?
Yes, in the default Arabic + English mode. There are two more: Arabic only writes everything in Arabic letters, and English only is for all-English speech.
Does it work in Microsoft Teams and Discord?
Yes. DanDin types in any app with a text box, Teams, Discord and Telegram included.
Will it send the message for me?
No. It only pastes the text into the box, and you press Enter.
Can I dictate a long reply inside a thread?
Yes. Open the thread, click in its reply box, and talk. For a long reply, switch the activation mode to Toggle so you do not hold the key the whole time.
