A dictation app for Windows that types where your cursor is
The short answer
DanDin (dandin.com) is a dictation app for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. Click where you want words, hold Ctrl and the Windows key, and talk. When you let go, an AI step drops the ums and repeats, adds punctuation, and types the text at your cursor in the app you were already using: email, chat, a document or a browser. It writes English, Arabic, or both in one dictation, and one dictation can run 30 minutes. Windows already has free voice typing: press the Windows logo key and H. Microsoft lists 46 languages for it on Windows 11, and its tidy-as-you-talk mode, Fluid dictation, needs a Copilot+ PC and English. DanDin is ours. It needs the internet, has no build for Windows on ARM, and cannot tell a password box from any other box. The free plan is 2,000 words every 7 days. Pro is USD 16.99 a month.
DanDin is our product. The Microsoft facts below come from Microsoft's own help pages, read on 8 October 2026 and linked at the end. If something changed, write to support@dandin.com and we will fix the page.
What does a dictation app for Windows actually do?
It turns your voice into typed text in the Windows app you have open. You do not open a separate window, record a file, or copy anything out. The words go where the blinking cursor is, the same way your keyboard would put them there.
There are two kinds of tools that people find when they search for a voice to text app for pc, and they do different jobs:
| Question | A dictation app (like DanDin) | A file transcription site |
|---|---|---|
| When you use it | You are writing something right now | You already have a recording |
| Where the text appears | Inside the app you are using | On the website, then you copy it |
| What you give it | Your voice, live, while you hold a key | An audio or video file |

DanDin is the first kind only. It does not take audio files.
What is built into Windows already?
Windows voice typing. Microsoft says: "To start dictating, select a text field and press the Windows logo key +H to open the dictation toolbar." It is free and nothing needs installing. Microsoft's list for Windows 11 starts "These languages support voice typing in Windows 11:" and names 46 languages. Arabic is not one of them.
Fluid dictation. This is Microsoft's tidy mode. Microsoft says it "automatically corrects grammar, punctuation, and filler words as you speak", and adds: "This is a Copilot+ PC feature and is available in all English locales." So on most PCs, and in every language but English, voice typing keeps your repeats and filler words.
Windows 10. On older machines, Microsoft says "Dictation commands are available in US English only".
Dictate in Word. Microsoft says "The dictation feature is only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers." It works inside Word, not in your other apps.
If you write English on a Copilot+ PC, try the free tools first. They may be all you need.
How do you use DanDin on Windows?
Install it
Download the installer from the download page. It is code signed with an EV certificate, so Windows shows who published it. Windows asks for one permission only: the microphone.
Click into any text box
Outlook, Gmail in Chrome, Teams, Slack, Word, Notepad, a search box. Wherever you would type.
Hold Ctrl + Win and talk
Either Ctrl and either Windows key work. Speak normally. Press Esc if you change your mind and nothing is typed.
Let go
The tidy text appears at your cursor, all at once. Every dictation is also saved in the app's History, in case you clicked away.
Can you change the Windows start key?
Yes. Ctrl + Win is the default because it sits under your fingers and rarely clashes with other apps. In Settings you can switch to right Alt or right Ctrl. If a game or another tool already uses those, Win + Shift + D is a backup that works too.
Holding a key for a long message gets tiring, so there are two other ways:
- Hands-free. It is on by default. Tap the start key twice, or hold it and press Space, and DanDin keeps listening after you let go. One more tap ends it.
- Toggle. In Settings, switch to Toggle: one press starts, the next press stops.
One dictation can run up to 30 minutes. DanDin warns you when one minute is left, and at 30 minutes it stops and types what you said.
Does it write Arabic and English on Windows?
Yes, and this is the reason DanDin exists. The default mode is called Arabic + English. You can say a sentence in English, the next in Arabic, and each one is written in its own script, with a new line where the language changes. There are two other modes if you only ever use one language: Arabic only and English only. How to switch is in switching between Arabic and English.
Windows voice typing does not list Arabic at all: we read Microsoft's list of 46 languages line by line on 8 October 2026, and Arabic is not in it.
What happens to your text on a Windows PC?
DanDin puts the text on the clipboard and pastes it, then puts back what you had copied before, whenever that is safe to do. On Windows it marks that text so it never goes into Windows clipboard history and is never synced to the cloud clipboard.
The sound itself is sent over the internet to DanDin's speech engine, then the words go through the tidy step and come back. That is why DanDin cannot work offline.
What will DanDin not do on Windows?
How much does it cost on Windows?
The same as on a Mac. Free is 2,000 words every 7 days, and the 7 days roll, so words come back day by day. No card and no end date. Free and Pro get the same speech engine and the same tidy step. Pro is USD 16.99 a month or USD 149 a year with unlimited words. In Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar the price is fixed in local money: 59 a month or 529 a year. If you have never had Pro, monthly Pro started from the app comes with 7 free days. Team and student plans are on the pricing page.
Which one should you pick on your PC?
- English, short notes, any PC: Windows logo key + H. Free and already there.
- English on a Copilot+ PC, and you want it tidied: Fluid dictation first.
- You live in Word and pay for Microsoft 365: Dictate in Word.
- Arabic, or Arabic and English mixed, in every app: that is what DanDin is for.
If you are still choosing, our dictation app comparisons put each tool's own words side by side. Want to know about the hold-a-key idea in general? Read voice keyboard for PC. And for what happens when your Wi-Fi drops mid-sentence, see does DanDin work offline.
Common questions
Is there a free dictation app for Windows?
Yes. Windows voice typing comes with Windows 11 and 10 at no cost: click a text box and press the Windows logo key and H. DanDin is also free for 2,000 words every 7 days, with no card.
Does DanDin work on Windows 10?
Yes, on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. There is no build for Windows on ARM, so Snapdragon laptops are not supported today.
Which key starts DanDin on Windows?
Hold Ctrl and the Windows key together. In Settings you can pick right Alt or right Ctrl instead. Win + Shift + D is a backup that always works.
Does DanDin see what I copy?
DanDin types by pasting, and it marks the text it pastes so Windows keeps it out of clipboard history and out of the cloud clipboard.
Can I use DanDin offline on my PC?
No. DanDin needs the internet. If the connection drops, nothing is typed, your dictation is kept on your PC, and you press Retry when you are back online.
